Jazzy Martha Levinson is back on the scene with her son. Both Branson and Carson face figures from their pasts. Modernization continues at Downton with the arrival of pigs, an alternate way to make money. Edith is alone and pregnant. Anna is raped and Bates is implicated in another murder. Edna returns. The new nanny calls baby Sybil an evil crossbreed. Michael Gregson plans to become German. An electric beater arrives in the kitchen. Bates helps out unemployed Molesley.
Lady Rose impersonates a maid and breaks a heart. Mary takes a major role in estate management. Single Lord Gillingham arrives. Opera singer Dame Nellie also arrives. And Sampson, the card sharp and cheat. Molesley helps out downstairs. Anna is raped. Bates knows something happened. Isobel emerges from grief to help Dr Clarkson.
Tom Gillingham proposes to Mary. Edith spends the night with Michael. Bates knows Anna was raped. New maid Baxter arrives with an electric sewing machine. Michael Gregson vanishes. Which strikes me as a very Downton place to be. Could it be that it is actually better because it is worse?

Tipped off by Anna, Mary goes to see him and explains all, thus scotching Vera's plan as the newspaper owner threatens her with libel action. S2, Ep6. An unrecognizable burn victim turns up at the convalescent home claiming to be Mary's presumed drowned cousin Patrick, Carlisle plans to lure Carson from Downton, and Bates' wife reneges on her divorce agreement. S2, Ep7. Ethel confronts her baby's grandparents, Bates thinks he might have played a role in his wife's death, Branson and Sybil elope, and Carlyle tries to recruit Anna to spy on Mary.
S2, Ep8. Ethel has to decide the future for her son, and Jane resigns from Downton. S2, Ep9. Christmas Downton Abbey is hosting a lavish Christmas party, yet despite being the season of goodwill, tensions are rife and Bates' arrest has cast a shadow over the festivities.
