The mushroom book will help you to recognise similar looking ones that potetentially could be dangerous and the tree book will help you to recognise certain decying trees as some species love a paticular tree and have a deadly lookalike that grows on different decaying trees. There both cheap and may be able to find in a local charity shop.
Now N. Lake District is amazing, savanake forest, new forest, Sherwood Forest, any farmers fields that have had cows in recently or for libs the last few years, I go to horse stables aswell. Once you understand the environment that each mushroom likes you will find it much easier to find them.
There are various websites used by experienced mushroom pickers you can upload that info too and hopefully somebody can help you out, or do your own reasearch and figure it out. Also if it has got psilocybin in it should quite quickly bruise blue. Apart from poisonous look alikes your biggest problem will be people with load mouths and police, stay discreet and stay safe!!
Did you find wavy caps in a forest in Brecon Beacons? Ive only ever found them once recently in a public gardens — woodchips next to lawn. Would love to find more! That can be seriously dangerous. In the study the active ingredient is psylocybin so these mushrooms would be very effective. The colour changes due to moisture level do not alter the mushrooms ingredients so to speak , and therefore keeps its potency. Picking mushrooms in the past, ive always just pulled them up, but I wonder if this damages the mycelium. Is it better to cut the stem with a sharp blade? My fields are never good two years in a row. Does anyone know about this? Someone told me I should flick the cap as soon as I pick it, to help spread the spores.
Also… is it possible to share pictures on this forum? Leaving a few around, and not picking all of them helps with the dispersal of spores.

Some of the older ones have a almost all white head with black gills. They smell earthy and then some seem to have deteriorated so the skin in transparent. Are these sounding similar. Also wondering if there is difference in potency with the age of the mushroom and which parts.. Does sound close. Good question about the potency. It keeps with age because they can be dried. Usually the whole mushroom is kept when dried anyway.
