Suture is specially prepared and sterilized thread which is used to sew the tissues together. In surgery or medical procedure, a ligature consists of a piece of thread suture tied around an anatomical structure, usually a blood vessel or another hollow structure e. Connected elastic ligatures—also called power chain or c-chain ligatures—come in a variety of colors and strengths.
The time of absorption depend on the strength of chromic solution used. Drying Strings are kept in suitable heat and temperature condition under suitable tension.
Finishing Dried strings are polished by mechanical means. The strings are rubbed against a abrasive surface to get smooth uniform string of circular section.
Very important part. Sterilisation Gut may be sterilized by heat, chemicals, ionising radiation. Chemical process include use of iodine. But disadvantage is that long immersion time in iodine solution and variable absorption time.
Best one is by gamma radiation. The tubes are placed in a basket and dried in a drying oven in which temperature is slowly raised. The dried gut is placed in autoclave and heated at C for several hours. Anhydrous fluid such as toluene and xylol is incorporated in the autoclave. Heating may be done in a non pressure vessel using anhydrous liquid of high boiling point. The tubes are then filled with sterile fluid and sealed by fusion. The envelops are then passed through an irradiation area on a conveyer system.
Very rapid process. Strength is 2. If the suture has been sterilized in iodine solution , then the suture is removed , drained and placed in 50 ml distilled water and incubated for 24 hours. The temperature of incubation here is 37 C. Then it is tranferred to suitable medium like thioglycollate Sutures sterilized by dry heat and stored in toluene need only to be rinsed in sterile water before transfer to the culture media.

Dry: A Memoir Augusten Burroughs. About 7. The inner most mucosa and two outer layers of submucosa, muscularis, and serosal layers, are removed with the help of a machine leaving behind the submucosa. Up to six such ribbons are stretched, spun and dried to form a uniform strand.
These fibres are polished to get smooth strings, gauzed for their diameter, cut into suitable lengths and sterilized by placing the catgut in glass tubes filled with anhydrous high-boiling liquids like toluene or xylene and then heating in an autoclave. Sterilization may be done by irradiating the suture by electron particles or by gamma rays from cobalt Kangaroo tendons, used in hernia and bone repairs, are prepared from the tails of kangaroo by the identical method adopted for the preparation of catgut, Chromicized surgical catguts are prepared by soaking the ribbons in solutions of chromium salts for tanning the tissues.
These fibres are not affected by proteolytic enzymes in the body and they are not absorbed rapidly in the body. Synthetic polyesters.
The polymers obtained by condensation of cyclic derivatives of glycolic acid glycolide with cyclic derivatives of lactic acid lacticide are used to prepare synthetic absorbable sutures.
