In tennis what is the difference between net and let

Jim Lavoie makes a valid point. PS, the last I looked, it was only Division 1 college tennis that banned lets. Has this expanded to Division 2, 3 and below now as well? Marty, as of my last understanding, it is only Div 1 that plays no serve lets. I think all net balls on serve should be played, if they land in the service box. Why do we play net balls during the point? How is that any different?

One minor correction. Looking forward to getting back to Naples in the fall to see many of you. Jim, interesting about the women … i would guess that there is less cheating with our lady friends.

In my last tennis game I called a Let. Both of my doubles opponents were deaf and did not hear it. They looked angry since they thought they had served in Ace. My partner and I decided not to call anymore Lets; but just to keep playing next time it happened.

However, if a server receives an additional service on the second serve, they get only one extra serve. There is also no restriction to how many serves let calls at any point. A point is not a let when the ball does not really reach in the correct service box in tennis. In place, it is considered as a fault. In some other less likely situation, maybe while attempting to play singles, a serve strikes the singles racket or the net post while playing doubles , and the ball reaches in the right service box, it is indeed a fault.

This is the term defined by the ITF for a fault:. As we know, a service let is a replay of a point, but there are also other occasions where the term let is used. In outdoor tennis, a point can be disrupted when an incoming ball enters the court in the middle of the point.

In pro tennis, an example of how often the umpire may rule a let is when a spectator, particularly a player who can see them, is trying to move during a point. As a viewer, it is expected to sit in your seat throughout a changeover in a match. There is no limit to the number of consecutive lets that a player can hit. The server continues to repeat their serve until they either make their serve or hits a fault.

After defeating Ayumi Morita in , Williams won four consecutive service games in a row. There really is no restriction on the number of successive lets that can be drawn. Di Wu, a Chinese player, attain the same number at a Challenger contest as was recorded on camera at the Anning Challenger in China.

It enhances the fairness of the game. If a player is disadvantaged by an incident not of his or her own doing, then a let allows them to replay the point without said disadvantage. This can lead to a speedier match. Let calls can happen during service and rallies in a tennis match.

There are set rules on what can be called a let during professional matches, and you can generally extend these rules in casual games. Below, we go over the tennis let rules for a service let and a rally let.

This is why a fault leads to a loss of the first serve or a point if on the second serve a double fault. One might ask how many let serves are allowed in tennis? The answer is, there are no limits to how many lets can be called for one point. Serena Willimas once had four service lets in a row! See the video here. In professional-level tennis, the nets are usually fitted with microphones, so even the slightest of touches can be identified, and the appropriate judgments can be made.
